Mr William Frederick Head founded the business in
March 1955. W. F. Head Potatoes Ltd was formed 10 years later.
William's sons, Bill and Tony joined him in 1965 and 1968 respectively
and W.F.Head & Sons was formed. Tony’s son, Brian joined the family
business in June 1998.
The business operates from The Yews ,Turley Green,
Alveley, Bridgnorth , Shropshire. Originally the business was started
with one Dutch barn and one lorry. Today we have over 10,000 square
feet of insulated, thermostatically controlled warehousing to ensure
that our
potatoes are kept in premium condition for the chipping trade. We now
operate seven lorries, four of which are 18 tonne, one 38 tonne and two
44 tonne, with fully trained drivers to ensure we can
always deliver our potatoes to our customers in peak condition, as they
left the farm. This includes double quilted jute frost blankets that
are applied in severe cold weather during transit to minimise any
chilling to the potatoes.
Products
Our "Head’s Ace Chippers"
Brand bags contain only potatoes that have been specially selected and
tested by ourselves to be clean and have the best frying and peeling
qualities.
We have specially designed our "Bullseye" Branded bag for
top grade WILJA potatoes grown on Shropshire and Lancashire fertile
black moss soils.
Other products
We also have over 60 growers who have been dealing with our family
business for over 45 years. During the early green top season which, is
in June, July and August potatoes are purchased from our growers and
checked on a daily basis.
Stored potatoes
During the autumn, winter and spring months our own fieldsman sources
the best samples of potatoes from the Eastern counties to ensure that
we maintain a regular sample of quality frying potatoes for the chip
shop industry. In addition to the Eastern counties we have many growers
in our own locality who store potatoes for release in the New Year
which, again are checked, in our own testing facilities and then again
in a commercial chip shop.
